Auto Glass & Windshield Service FAQs

Below are the most valuable asked questions from our customers in the past

What kind of glass are you using to replace my broken glass with?

We only use glass that passes DOT (Department of Transportation) safety standards to ensure that you are getting premium quality glass that fits best and is the safest.

What kind of warranties do you have?

We offer a lifetime warranty against any water and air leaks on all the work that was completed.

What type of sealant are you using to keep my windshield secure?

With certifications from DOT industries we only use the best sealants that are crash tested to ensure occupants inside the vehicle are safe and that the windshield stays in place in the event of an accident.

How long does it take to replace my windshield?

It typically takes an hour to complete the replacement plus another 30 minutes for the drive-away time. This is to ensure the glass stays in place and maintains structural intergrity.

Are you able to cover new my windshield cost if I decide to go through insurance?

We deal directly with your insurance provider to deliver a stress free experience by dealing with all the behind the scenes paperwork.

Do you cover my auto insurance deductible if I have one?

Auto glass damage

Why is it important to repair or replace my windshield?

Your windshield makes up nearly 30% of your vehicle’s structure. In other words, it plays a vital role in maintaining your vehicle's structural integrity in the event of a rollover or front-end collision. As well, it helps ensure your airbags deploy as intended to protect your passengers.

Never underestimate the role a properly fitted windshield can play in restoring your vehicle’s structural strength. Your safety can depend on it.

What’s the threshold between repairing a damage and replacing the entire windshield?

If your windshield’s damage is smaller than the size of a loonie ($1 coin), not in the driver's line of vision, and at least 4 cm from the edge of the windshield, we can likely repair it.

If your windshield damage consists of more than 3 impact points or a crack larger than a loonie ($1), is in the driver's line of vision, or is less than 4 cm from the edge, we strongly recommend replacement.

In either case, you can schedule your appointment online or obtain a quote to have your glass damage fixed.

Can my windshield shatter?

Yes, but it’s unlikely. Windshields are made of laminated glass and consist of a plastic compound called polyvinyl butyral (or PVB), which prevents glass from shattering.

What’s involved in a windshield repair?

Windshield repair involves introducing a product under pressure into the chip. This 70-step process restores the windshield to its original strength and reduces the appearance of damage. Take a look at our windshield repair service.

When will my windshield repair or replacement be ready?

Repairs can often be completed in less than an hour. Replacements, meanwhile, are done in 3 hours including the camera recalibration process.

When will I be able to drive my vehicle safely again?

You can usually drive away immediately after a windshield repair or a side-window replacement. For windshield replacements, we recommend waiting until 30 minutes after the replacement has been completed.

Your technician will inform you if any additional time is required.

Can I be assured that the chip will not show after the repair of my windshield?

Unfortunately, no.

A windshield chip repair prevents further damage to your glass and restores the structural integrity of the vehicle. However, following a repair, a slight blemish or imperfection where the impact occurred is normal.

The good news is that, in most cases, you’ll notice a big improvement in the appearance of your windshield. In the unlikely event that a crack would form from the repaired chip, we’ll credit the cost of the repair towards a windshield replacement.

Check out the Guarantees section of our website for more details.

Are your technicians certified?

Yes, all of our technicians are certified, meaning they’ve been thoroughly trained on the proper procedures for repairing and replacing auto glass.

Why is it important where on my windshield the impact occurred?

Because it could determine if a repair or replacement is necessary.

If the impact is located in the driver’s line of vision, we might be able to repair the damage; however, since this would affect your visibility, the safer option is likely to replace your windshield.

Also, if the impact is located too close to the body of the vehicle, we won’t be able to use the equipment needed to repair the damage, and the windshield will have to be replaced anyway.

Is it possible to have more than one impact repaired?

We can repair up to three (3) impact points. If your windshield has more than three, its strength is likely compromised, and, therefore, we recommend replacing it for your safety.

Will you install the same glass as the manufacturer?

In most cases, OEE windshield (Original Equipment Equivalent) is recommended by windshield repair service centres since it has the same quality standards as OE (Original Equipment) windshield, but usually cost less.

Rest assured that our auto glass meets or exceeds all government, industry, and safety standards. All of our products and services undergo rigorous testing to ensure you receive the highest quality and state-of-the-art workmanship. If you have more questions, read our article about OEM and OEE windshields.

Advanced driver assistance systems

What is an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS)?

An advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) — guided primarily by a camera positioned behind the windshield, along with other sensors — is responsible for monitoring a vehicle’s environment and detecting potentially dangerous situations. The goal is to increase safety and reduce the possibility of a collision.

Which ADAS components are impacted during a windshield replacement?

The main ADAS component impacted is the front camera, which acts as an image-processing sensor providing data concerning the road around you.

Following a windshield replacement, your front camera must be recalibrated to ensure it works as intended. Otherwise, your safety system runs the risk of becoming deficient or decreasing in effectiveness.

Is it mandatory for my dealership to perform the camera recalibration?

Absolutely not! Despite the fact that almost all vehicle manufacturers require your front camera to be recalibrated following a windshield replacement, there’s nothing written in stone that says your dealership has to do it.

On the contrary — you can count on our experts to take care of it immediately following your windshield replacement!

At Speedy Glass, we have the expertise and equipment to recalibrate all makes and models of vehicles.

How is the camera recalibration carried out to ensure a properly functioning ADAS?

There are three types of recalibration, which vary based on your vehicle’s make and model: static, dynamic, and universal.

Static recalibration must be performed at a service centre suited for recalibration and requires the use of targets unique to each manufacturer mounted on a device at the front of the vehicle. This can take up to an hour or slightly more, depending on your vehicle’s make and model.

Dynamic recalibration requires driving the vehicle at a speed and distance defined by the manufacturer on well-marked roads to recalibrate the front camera. Like static, this takes up to an hour, depending on your vehicle’s make and model.

Finally, universal calibration involves a combination of the static process followed by the dynamic process.

How much should I expect to pay for my camera recalibration?

The cost of recalibration can range up to $500 depending on the type of recalibration required and your vehicle’s make and model.

If you file an insurance claim (if applicable), the cost could be covered and you would, therefore, not pay a cent.

Can I get in touch with Speedy Glass if something’s not right with my ADAS?

We only recalibrate the front camera following the replacement of a windshield. In the event that your ADAS malfunctions independently, we recommend contacting your dealer.

Is the recalibration guaranteed by Quick Chip Auto Glass?

Yes. We guarantee your recalibration for a period of 12 months (one year).

Vehicle information

Where do I find my Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)?

Your VIN is the 17-character alphanumeric code corresponding to your vehicle’s serial number. You can find it in one of four places:

- On your insurance certificate

- On your car registration

- In the lower corner of your windshield

- Inside your driver’s side door.

Why is so much information about my vehicle required before an auto glass replacement?

Because it’s vital that we install the windshield type that best corresponds to the make and model of your vehicle.

We make every effort to order parts that precisely match your vehicle’s specifications and replace your windshield as efficiently as possible.

Appointments

Can I leave my vehicle at a service centre before opening hours and come back for it later in the evening?

At some service centres, yes. However, we recommend calling your local service centre ahead to find out if it's possible and, if so, where to leave your keys.

Do your service centres have Wi-Fi?

Does my insurance company or broker need to be notified before I get in touch with Quick Chip Auto Glass?

No, we take care of that for you. We’ll contact your insurance company and submit the claim on your behalf.

Should I expect an increase in my premiums by filing a glass damage claim to my insurance company?

Your insurer is in a better position to answer this question, so please contact them for more details.

However, most of our customers claim the cost of repairing glass damage from their insurance company. To be sure, please refer to your policy or contact your insurance agent and/or provider to confirm your specific coverage.

Will checking my deductible or inquiring about auto glass claims raise my insurance rate?

Asking an insurance company about policy coverage and deductibles is not normally considered a claim. Please contact your insurance provider for more information.

How can I find out what my deductible is?

Deductibles tend to vary, depending on the nature of the incident. Your deductible is likely indicated in your insurance policy. You can also contact your insurance provider or we can do this for you. No taxes are applicable on the deductible.

Will my deductible change depending on whether my windshield is repaired or replaced?

Many insurance companies cover windshield repairs at 100% coverage with no deductible. For specifics related to your coverage, please contact your agent and/or insurance provider or refer to your insurance policy.
